Setting Up Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP Integration on Azure Active Directory

In the ever-evolving landscape of business and technology, the ability to seamlessly integrate external applications with your Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP is paramount. It’s a gateway to unlocking new possibilities, streamlining operations, and enhancing productivity.

In this blog, we will guide you through the preliminary setup steps required to establish integrations with external applications in Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP. These steps ensure a seamless and secure connection with Azure Active Directory and your external applications.

Creating Application ID and Secret:

1.  Begin by logging into the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com

2.  Search for “App registrations” and select “New registration.”

3. Provide a clear and descriptive name for the application registration that reflects its purpose. It’s considered a best practice to register individual applications, especially when multiple external applications are communicating with Dynamics 365. You may need to repeat this registration process for each application. For illustration purposes, let’s create a new application called “XYZ Integration.”

4.  Choose the appropriate source of the application account that will be used for integration.

5.  Click “Register” to complete the application registration. Once registered, take note of the Application (client) ID and the Directory (tenant) ID. You will need these details for the integration setup.

Creating Application Secret:

1.  After registering your application, navigate to “Certificates & secrets,” then select “Client secrets” and create a “New client secret.”

2. Provide a meaningful description for the client secret and specify its expiration duration. Remember that if the previous secret expires, you will need to create a new one. Make sure to keep a record of the secret ID, as it will be required by the external application.

3. Under “API permissions,” you can further define granular access by clicking “Add a permission” or grant admin consent for your Azure tenant if the application is within your tenant.

4. Select the specific application in Dynamics 365 ERP with which the external application will interact.

5.  Choose the appropriate permission types based on the integration requirements. This allows you to specify what data and functionality the external application will access within Dynamics 365 ERP.

With these steps, you will get to complete the preliminary setup within the Azure portal. Now, make sure to note the following details to proceed with the integration process:

  1. Application (Client ID)
  2. Tenant ID
  3. Secret ID
  4. Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain URL

Logging into Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP:

1.  Now, log in to Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP using a D365FO user account. Ensure that the user, in this case, “Admin,” is created and has the necessary permissions to proceed with the setup.

2.  Navigate to the “System administration” module and select “Microsoft Entra ID applications,” which was formerly known as Azure Active Directory application setup.

3.  Enter the Client ID that you copied from the Application registration page.

4.  Provide a descriptive name for the application in Dynamics 365 ERP that this external application will communicate with.

5.  Assign a Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain user from the lookup. This user account will be associated with the external application.

6.  Click the “Save” button to complete the setup.

You have now successfully completed the preliminary setup for registering your application on Azure and configuring Dynamics 365 Finance & Supply Chain ERP for integration with external applications. We hope you find this detailed blog helpful.
